Starting at Bearfoot School of Performing Arts

We have classes appropriate to students of all ages, ranging from 2½ to adult, scheduling classes around nursery, school and college.

Our team consists of teachers, senior teachers and class developers, with members of staff often working together on projects and tailoring the classes so that as little or as much responsibility is put onto students to push them in their development at the school.

Examination and Performance

We offer internationally recognised examinations from primary to advanced levels in dance, drama and musical theatre, as well as performances for the local community and beyond.

Examinations and performances are optional and not forced onto any student who feels uncomfortable or unprepared to participate.

Classes

Street Jazz – Funky class inspired by youth culture with pop video type routines exploring different styles. It is great fun and hugely popular. ISTD examinations are available.

Contemporary – Essentially free-form whilst improving technique, this work can be theatrical or beautiful and most definitely varied. Some cross-over into Jazz and Commercial dance. This dance form has a really creative buzz and is totally accessible.

Jazz – The classic West End style work has great value to technique enhancement and has the cross over elements of Street Jazz, Contemporary and Modern dance. It develops core strength and high energy

Modern – The ISTD Modern syllabus is creative and expressive. It has a strong technical basis and encourages musicality and quality contrasts. Modern dance covers a broad range of styles and is suitable for Musical Theatre and performance dance. ISTD examinations are available.

Musical Theatre – The singer’s class with dance and drama elements. Vocal warm-ups are followed by songs from musicals you know and those you’ve yet to discover. Musical performance orientated classes. Cross-over with Drama and Dance. Trinity College examinations are available.

Ballet – Strength, stamina and cleanness of movement. Ballet technique puts line and aesthetic precision into any of the other dance forms. Important for entry into full-time schools. ISTD examinations are offered but our teaching methods primarily inspire individual creativity and joy.

Tap – Our tap is taught to develop fast feet and soft lines. With music or without, story-telling or amalgamations for a greater degree of rhythmic expression – a varied tap syllabus. American Tap and ISTD examinations are available.

Petite Feet – From 2½ to 3½. Dances, children’s instruments, songs and theatre playtime as an exciting introduction to self-expression and interaction. Action stories and songs lead the pupil into Musical Theatre, Drama or Dance.

Drama (Junior Work) – The emphasis of these classes is on stretching the imagination, discovering and/or harnessing confidence and sending these skills to work on project and performance based pieces. Devised and scripted pieces, improvisation, solo and group work, physical theatre, voice, masks and props are all part of discovering drama as an art and a life skill. LAMDA examinations will be offered where appropriate.

Drama (Senior Work) – Focussing on character and confidence building for more expression and creativity, the work presented to Seniors includes:

Improvisation – For quick thinking, trust and team work skills.

Script Work – For further stimulus and extending repertoire.

Of script marking, technical direction, theatre layout and terminology and note taking.

On theatre practitioners, physical styles and styles of performance.

Devised pieces (with direction), adaptations and full length scripted pieces.

LAMDA examinations will be offered where appropriate.
